Imam Sadiq (as): “On the Resurrection Day, a believer will be asked to watch the people, and find out whoever has somehow helped him by feeding him, or giving him something to drink, etc. He will then be allowed to take the hands of all the people who somehow helped him and take them all to Heaven.”
It is our moral duty to do the very best we can in working to rooting out poverty in our community, in the Shi’a community and in humanity wherever possible. This is the tradition of our beloved Ahlul Bayt and to neglect this duty, would be to neglect our faith. This fight is of paramount importance and cannot be neglected.
It’s time for us to shift our thinking on this and focus away from engaging simply in welfare work to economic upliftment. I want The World Federation to create strong models of economic development. We must work to provide both training the skills of the deserving as well as developing microfinance systems to help uplift people from poverty.
Of course there remains some groups in poverty who need welfare – orphans, widows, seniors and the disabled – for these groups we must continue providing much needed support. In order to make this more effective, I want to reduce the duplication in this field between The World Federation and others in our community who operate trusts and charities. Instead of working in duplication with each other, let us now work together in the fight for poverty.
I pledge to create an economic upliftment strategy for each region in partnership with the regional bodies, so that the fight against poverty is not a noble sounding, blanket promise but a specific policy, which is tailored.
I pledge to work with all organisations run by our community in the fight against poverty.
I pledge to do my utmost to raise the capital much needed for economic upliftment and to create greater awareness of the various schemes which our community can utilise.
And I pledge to fight against poverty and to ensure The World Federation works towards eradicating it in our community and the wider shia community – and doing its utmost to help humanity at large.
As ever I want to hear from YOU on this issue:
- Are you involved in an organisation, which could benefit from working with The World Federation?
- Do you have any ideas that can help our community in this area?
- Do you think The World Federation is doing enough on this front?
