Our seniors are the foundation of our community. We are indebted to them for the sacrifices they have made for us. Today, many elders in our community feel disconnected and even isolated. Some are concerned about the loss of our mother tongue, some fear that our community is losing its culture and some feel that our religious values are being diluted. We must acknowledge the sacrifices of our respected elders, value their wisdom and make use of their experiences.
Age is no barrier to enthusiasm and ability. We see senior citizen groups in our communities throughout the world continuing to inspire us with their commitment and service to the community. Our elders must be supported and encouraged in their activities. We need to learn from them and we need to find out what we can do to support our seniors, who have worked tirelessly for their families and community.
I Pledge To:
Work closely with the Regions to provide strong support to senior citizen groups in our communities. To help them network with each other and feel more closely connected to the wider community.
Help the regions train our elders including in IT skills, so that our seniors have the opportunity for lifelong learning.
Create systems for retirees to volunteer and offer their skills to the community - so that the enthusiasm of our elders is channelled in activities for the betterment of our community
I am working on more pledges for my manifesto and would like to hear from you:
How can we make our elders feel valued?
How can we start new senior citizen groups where there aren't any?
